Transport owners and workers of the country including capital Dhaka have called for an indefinite strike following the conviction of two drivers for road crashes.
According to several media reports long-haul bus services have also come to a halt at Dhaka’s Gabtali Bus Terminal.
A passenger in capital named Aktaruzzaman Rana said, “I came out of my home from Bashundhara residential area at 11:00am to go to Farmgate. I waited over two hours at Bishwaroad intersection but can not manage to board any vehicles of city service.
Finding no way, I took a CNG-run auto rickshaw spending 400 taka for a distance of TK 150.”
The strike also affected businesses as several hundred freight trucks are now stuck at Jessore’s Benapole land port.
The death conviction of a trucker in Dhaka yesterday fueled the transport workers who were already on strike in Khulna division and helped it spread countrywide.
Thousands of passengers were seen remaining stranded at Gabtoli bus terminal, one of the entry points to the capital. Transport workers were seen forcefully stopping passenger carrying vehicles with sticks and rods.
